Stone Barrington has a knack for attracting the ladies and never fails to have several on his arm all at once. Lured by his sometimes lover Dame Felicity Devonshire, head of M16 asking him to purchase an estate owned by Sir Charles Bourne before the man passes away. Dealing with the legalities, the money involved and the contracts are nothing foreign to Stone who has unlimited resources and never seems to lack places to live in. He buys Windward Hall from Sir Charles Bourne and here is where the plot gets dicey. Hoping to live quietly and use the estate as the center for his son Peter’s movie production company since the ambiance fits it perfectly for the themes of what he is creating, things turn sour when the man living in the house next door is found dead in front of his new acquisition. The body of Sir Richard Curtis, his new neighbor is found and another man called the Hermit is arrested for the murder. But, as events unfold and we need Inspector Sherlock since this takes place in England, readers might wonder whether they arrested the right man especially when he winds up committing suicide in jail. The hermit who left the Royal Marines where both Charles and Richard served confesses to the murder but why and proceeds to hang himself in his cell!
Stone is just starting to get a handle on his new property and learns of a group called The Chosen Few, a religious cult, that wants to buy the Curtis estate and here is where things get dangerous and a little more interesting. As Stone learns more about the death and realizes that he needs some new acquisitions he goes off on a buying tangent and purchases a Bentley, a Porche, and possibly the Curtis estate to stop this religious group from purchasing it.
